Departments and teams

Departments, teams, broadcast channels, and reporting structure.

This guide is the detailed Campsite help article for this topic. It is written for UK employers and people teams using a branded organisation workspace such as {org}.camp-site.co.uk.

How departments and teams fit together

Departments are the top-level units in your organisation (for example Hospitality, Retail, or People). Teams sit inside departments and group people for broadcasts, rosters, and day-to-day coordination.

Examples of team names within a department:

  • Operations
  • Sales
  • HR
  • Admin

Department membership (who belongs to the department for rota, channels, and broadcasts) is separate from team rosters. A person can be in a department without being on every team in that department.

Reporting managers and team rosters

Each team can have a reporting manager (team lead). When you set one, CampSite can add people from that manager's direct reports who belong to the same department.

Reporting lines are managed in All members or the org chart, not on the team page itself. Keep line managers up to date there, then use Add from reporting line on a team to sync the roster.

Managers with the right access can manage teams for their departments from Manager β†’ Teams (/manager/teams).

Creating a department

  1. Go to Admin β†’ Departments (/admin/departments).
  2. Click New department.
  3. Enter the department name, type, and optional description.
  4. Assign one or more department managers.
  5. Add broadcast channels and members.

Creating a team under a department

  1. Go to Admin β†’ Teams (/admin/teams) or open a department and use the Teams tab.
  2. Find the department (for example Operations or People).
  3. Pick a team name (Operations, Sales, HR, Admin, or your own label).
  4. Optionally choose a reporting manager.
  5. Tick Add direct reports from the reporting line to populate the roster from people who report to that manager in the department.

Team leads can rename their team and edit the roster. Org admins can delete teams.

Broadcast channels

Every department has at least one broadcast channel. When a manager or admin sends a broadcast, they target a channel or team. Staff subscribe to channels from their profile settings.

Scheduling and timezones

Rota and calendar scheduling use the organisation timezone set in org settings. Teams do not have their own timezones.

Editing and archiving

Open a department from Admin β†’ Departments to edit name, managers, channels, members, and teams. Archive departments that are no longer active to hide them from day-to-day views while keeping history.
